iSPACE STEM Educator Academy NKY

The application period for 2016-2017 is now OPEN!   DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 2/28/17
FOURTH grade educators from Northern Kentucky are invited to apply for iSPACE STEM Educator Academy.  Participation is limited to one educator per school.  Applications for the inaugural cohort of educators will be accepted online until midnight of February 28, 2017. You will be notified of the review committee’s decision regarding acceptance into the Academy no later than March 15, 2017.

The iSPACE STEM Educator Academy NKY is designed to enhance STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education by providing opportunities for educators to:

  • experience the practices of STEM first-hand and translate these into effective classroom instructional strategies and techniques
  • enhance teaching in STEM content so students develop critical-thinking skills while learning meaningful content
  • increase leadership capacity to sustain changes in your school/district


Benefits to Participating Educators


15-18 contact hours of professional development covering various 4th grade Next Generation Science Standards related to: PS3 Energy; PS4 Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer; ESS1 Earth’s Place in the Universe; ESS2 Earth’s Systems; ESS3 Earth and Human Activity; ETS1 Engineering Design.  (We cannot cover all topics during the Academy. The iSPACE Educator will collaborate with participants to determine specific topic areas to be presented.)

Five – six sessions will be offered over the course of 2016 and 2017.

  1. Increased foundational knowledge of grade appropriate STEM content and effective pedagogy
  2. Increased capacity to provide leadership for improving STEM learning in your school/district
  3. Opportunity to collaborate in a regional STEM learning community
  4. Increased student interest in STEM content and careers
  5. Participation in the Academy will address a variety of the Kentucky Professional Learning Standards
  6. Classroom and presenter kit materials and supplies (valued at ~$1000)
  7. Stipend of $300
  8. A free iSPACE field trip for one class and discounted rates for additional classes
  9. Snacks/meals provided during all training sessions
  10. All benefits (stipend, field trip, workshops, kits, food, etc.) are valued at over $2550

Commitments of Participating Educators

  1. Attend all professional development sessions/meetings associated with the project in 2016 and 2017 (All training sessions will be offered during out of school hours, including summer)
  2. Participate as a presenter for one session to colleagues (school/district)
  3. Support iSPACE and your district with obtaining evaluation data through participating in short surveys, interviews, observations, and/or providing student data
  4. Participate in monthly online interactions (polls, journal responses, etc.) throughout the program

Commitments of Participating Educators’ Administration

  1. Support and encourage participant.
  2. Provide opportunity (preferably during school in-service days) for participant to present at least one session to colleagues (school/district).



Eligibility Criteria:

  • Employed as a full-time teacher in Kentucky for the 2016-2017 school year and intend to continue in 2017-2018
  • Teach 4th grade
  • Have a strong desire to improve STEM teaching and learning in the classroom

Selection Process:
The selection process is based upon the responses on the application form and school/community demographics. The iSPACE STEM Educator Academy’s goal is to provide opportunities to educators from a broad spectrum of schools to include diversity in size, school type (private/public, rural/urban), and socioeconomic backgrounds of student populations and communities.

Session Dates:

Dates will be determined after selection of the cohort based on best availability of participants (Unless stated at a later date, weeknight sessions will run from 4:30 – 8:00 pm and include dinner.  Summer sessions will run from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and include lunch.)
